Dorota HAWRYLUK – “Because beauty is deeply rooted in us.” On the Poetic Form of the Biblical Meditations by Karol Wojtyła–John Paul II DOI 10.12887/32-2019-2-126-14 The literary study of the poetry of Karol Wojtyła–John Paul II is specifically focused on the description of its nature, or uniqueness. Numerous scholars have attempted to point out the principle responsible for the integrity of this output and, consequently, to determine the literary identity of its author. The study in question is marked, on the one hand, by an effort to outline and define the intrinsic factors contributing to the ultimate shape of particular poems by Karol Wojtyła–John Paul II and, on the other, by the attempt to reconstruct their sources. A similar perspective has been adopted by the author of the present paper, who scrutinizes the issue of the poetic form characteristic of the Biblical meditations by Karol Wojtyła–John Paul II. While the form of these meditative poems is certainly among the crucial marks of his poetic discourse, it also represents a breach in the way poetry is made in modern times: Karol Wojtyła–John Paul II apparently abandons the most widely accepted aesthetic canons in order to express his most personal spiritual experience eloquently. The paper comprises an extensive analysis of the literary practices employed by Karol Wojtyła–John Paul II and refers them to Wojtyła’s ideas on the rules of artistic creation which he followed in his poetic output and theoretically expounded in the letters he wrote in his youth to Mieczysław Kotlarczyk. Wojtyła’s literary fascinations, rooted in the Christian tradition of the Polish nation and frequently discussed in his letters, are also taken into consideration as a factor contributing to the literary form of Wojtyła’s meditative poems. Their fundamental mark, which comes to light as a result of the detailed analysis conducted in the paper, is, on the one hand, the integration the poet accomplished of the elements deriving from the literary conventions familiar to him and the specific locus theologicus rather than loci communi he worked out based on those elements, on the other. The meditative style of the poetry of Karol Wojtyła–John Paul II is largely determined by his frequent reference to Biblical texts present already in his early works, the practice which, one might say, was the programmatic axis of his output. The Biblical meditation of Karol Wojtyła–John Paul II may be interpreted as a continuous and determined effort, guided by the Word of God, to reach the deepest roots of the beauty of one’s spiritual identity.
