The paper addresses Fyodor Dostoevsky’s approach to the issue of beauty. The starting point of the reflections is two quotations from his works: “The world will be saved by beauty” (The Idiot) and “The world will become the beauty of Christ” (Notes on The Devils). Based on the writer’s notes present in the rough copies of his novels, personal confessions he made in his letters, and his journalistic texts, as well as the words pronounced by the protagonists of his works, the author aims at a reconstruction of Dostoevsky’s creed of a Christian writer. Kalophania denotes the revelation of Beauty–Christ in the world. Evidence of his presence is found both in the beauty of nature (as in Makar’s vision in The Raw Youth, or in Zosima’s vision in The Karamazov Brothers) and in the beauty of the human being (as expressed in The Idiot and in The Karamazov Brothers). According to Dostoevsky, the redemptive power of beauty is manifested in Paschal, kenotic beauty, which embraces the love for human beings God manifests by taking the ugliness of sin upon himself (The Idiot). In Dostoevsky’s novels, yearning for the fullness of beauty has been expressed by means of images of heaven, the heavenly feast, and the communion with Beauty–Christ (as in The Karamazov Brothers and The Heavenly Christmas Tree).
