The essay addresses questions related to the solitude human beings experience in the boundary situations of birth and death. The author analyzes some of the meanings of the claim that man is born and dies alone. The discussion has been inspired by, among others, Blaise Pascal’s reflection on the human being as a thinking reed, Jacques Lacan’s concept of the mirror phase, as well as by Plato’s Phaedo and the description, provided by Alfred Delp, a Jesuit sentenced to death for resistance against the Nazis during World War II, of his experience before the imminent execution.
