Agnieszka RESZKA, Between the Freedom of Will and Determinism: On Contingency in the Relationship between Anne Catherine Emmerich and Clemens Brentano, as Seen in the Light of Odo Marquard’s In Defense of the Accidental

Cena brutto: 7,00 PLN za szt.

The article explores the theme of the accidental in the relationship between Anne Catherine Emmerich, a German mystic living at the turn of the 19th century, and Clemens Brentano, a German Romantic poet who was almost her contemporary. As a result of their encounter, Brentano became Emmerich’s “secretary” and wrote down the contents of her visions. The contingency of the relationship in question is scrutinized against the background of the apology of the accidental worked out by philosopher Odo Marquard. The initial hypothesis assumes that while Emmerich and Brentano’s encounter itself may be considered as accidental, or contingent, its accidentality (contingency) was marked by asymmetry and, as a series of unpredetermined events, is visible in Brentano’s rather than in Emmerich’s biography. The mystic had seen the arrival of the Pilgrim (as she would later call Brentano) in her visions, although she had not been familiar with the details of his coming. Once Brentano visited her, she began to meticulously describe her visions to him, and their cooperation lasted until her death in 1824. The hypothesis assumed in the paper was tested against the resources and the existing research on Emmerich and Brentano, and then analyzed in the light of selected works by Odo Marquard. The scrutiny made it possible to extract the meaning of the accidental in the relationship between Emmerich and Brentano. Further research on the subject might include an analysis of the contents of Emmerich’s visions Brentano wrote down, as well as an overall appreciation of their work.
