Maciej Teodor Kociuba, Poetry “that Overhangs the Depths”: An Attempt to Interpret Karol Wojtyła’s – John Paul II’s Poetry within the Cognitivist Paradigm

Cena brutto: 7,00 PLN za szt.

The article presents an attempt to interpret the poetry of Karol Wojtyła – John Paul II using categories inspired by the Gestalt theory of cognition. The subject of the analysis is the poem entitled Song of the Hidden God. In this cycle of thirty-three poems, the role of the pictorial layer is examined by applying an original strategy. The images conveyed in the poems with words form complex wholes. The images, which appear as semi-transparent complexes, can be apprehended simultaneously. The reader recreates them in his or her imagination and discovers relationships that bind them. In this poetry, thanks to its concise form, metaphors, and image-based coherence, it is possible to partially suspend the passage of time. Thanks to memory and imagination, the reader can explore the poem as if he or she were looking (synchronically) at an ordered and sensibly structured image. Abstract concepts are linked to concrete images. In this way, the pictorial layer of the work provides the foundation for its semantic structure. Karol Wojtyła – John Paul II’s manner of using language has been compared to the poetic technique applied by Polish poet Józef Czechowicz, a representative of the Second Avant-garde. In certain formal aspects, works of the two poets show surprising similarities. The article confirms that an application the chosen cognitive strategy in the analysis of lyrical religious poetry can bring interesting results.
